National Book Lovers Day: August 9, 2025

August 07, 2025

We're celebrating another National Book Lovers Day at Oklahoma Financial Center! I took another poll to see what everyone was reading this summer, and here's what they shared:

We'll start with Lia, who also has a goal of reading 67 books this year (two more than she read last year)! She is balancing reading for professional development and reading for pleasure:

I am reading 2 books at the moment! Well...and all of my study materials (but that's boring).

Unreasonable Hospitality: The Power of Giving People More Than They Expect by Will Guidara, and The Blighted Stars by Megan E O'Keefe.

Alan is also striking a balance:

I have two books going.

For pleasure I have The Whistler by John Grisham, and for personal development I have Disciples Eldership: A Quest for Identity and Ministry by Peter Morgan.

Porter was lucky to attend a conference with Dan Harris as a keynote speaker, and is now reading Dan's 10% Happier: How I Tamed The Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works. We look forward to witnessing Porter's transformation into the Office Meditation Guru, and hope he'll share his newfound wisdom with the rest of us.

Karen is still on a podcast streak! Earlier this year, she shared with us a new show with the "cheeky" title of Up Your Assets, hosted by Ray Ferrara (a Florida financial advisor and a close personal friend of Karen's).

(Shay's note: my apologies for the pun. I couldn't resist.)

Are you into romance novels? What about werewolves? What would you say to BOTH? Chealita has the one for you, but don't say you weren't warned:

I’m reading The Lycan Prince's Fated Mate, but I’m not sure you want to do a blog on it.

Caiden isn't reading anything currently, she says. What she didn't say out loud: she reads when she wants to!

As for me, I'm still on a fitness/nutrition/health kick, but have been taking a deeper dive into genetics and how they may influence the former. My favorite read on the subject has been Dirty Genes: A Revolutionary Approach to Health and Wellness Through Nutritional Genetics and Personalized Plans for a Happier, Healthier You, by Ben Lynch. I found out I do have one of the "dirty" genes and that it probably explains one of the more persistent and mystifying results on my blood test. I've made some changes and look forward to seeing if they work!

We're always looking for good reads here at Oklahoma Financial Center, so if you have one to recommend, send us a message and tell us about it!
